MONEY SAVING: Martin says Brits should always pay in euros or the local currency

Once you take into account flights, accommodation and spending money, summer holidays can be extremely costly – especially if you have a family.

In a bid to save money many Brits are opting for a staycation this year, with Torquay topping the list of popular seaside resorts.

However, if you are travelling overseas Martin Lewis has an easy tip that could help save you money.

Speaking on This Morning, the 46-year-old money guru told Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield, Brits should always pay in euros when using their card abroad.

At some establishments, guests will be asked whether they want to pay using pounds or euros when paying on credit card.

Martin, who founded website moneysvingexpert.com, said: “When asked, always pay in euros (or the local currency).

“If you pay in pounds the overseas bank/store will do the conversion, and their rates tend to be awful.

“Pay in euros is far safer as your bank will do the exchange – and that is usually at least as good if not better.”

He also pointed out that families can save money by taking food with them to the airport.

“You can take any food you like through security, said Martin.

“In fact pack a picnic to eat on the flight, as its far cheaper than paying the £3-£5ish for a sandwich on board.”

Earlier this week, Martin revealed the savings account with the best interest rate for 2018.

“The Post Office Online Saver account pays the highest 1.33% AER variable on deposits from £1, and is the best easy access rate weve seen since Feb,” he said.

“The account allows you to make unlimited penalty free withdrawals – a cracking deal.”
