Most people probably don't realise taking an image and sharing it online can get them in serious trouble.

It all comes down to what time of day the photograph is taken.

A picture of the Eiffel Tower during the day is legal, but it is a different situation at night.

At night, a light show is performed on the tower which was created by a French artist who owns the copyright.

EIFFEL TOWER: You must never take a photo of the French landmark in the dark

The lights, which flash every night until 1am, were added to the landmark in 1985.

This means by sharing images of the tower at night, tourists are breaching copyright laws and could be fined or even sent to prison.

With millions of photographs across the world, it would be incredibly difficult to enforce such a law on tourists.

But people who use the images of the Eiffel Tower at night commercially, should be aware of getting permission beforehand.
