Apple has stepped in to quash the ‘batterygate’ controversy by offering users a cheap way of replacing their iPhone batteries.
Yesterday, the tech colossus issued an apology after it admitted slowing down older iPhones to protect the battery and make sure the device doesn’t suffer unwanted shutdowns.
The measure is designed to boost the lifespan of an iPhone, but has sparked conspiracy theories about why iPhones appear to slow down as they age.
On its website, Apple wrote: ‘We have never – and would never – do anything to intentionally shorten the life of any Apple product, or degrade the user experience to drive customer upgrades.
‘We’ve been hearing feedback from our customers about the way we handle performance for iPhones with older batteries and how we have communicated that process.
‘We know that some of you feel Apple has let you down. We apologise.’
How do I get a replacement battery?
You need to take your iPhone into an Apple store or contact its online support team to book a repair.
In America, the price of getting a battery fitted is set to drop from $79 to $29.
Here in the UK, it costs £79 to get a battery replacement, so we expect to see the service on offer at a price of about £29.
Apple is also working on a new version of iOS 11, the software which powers iPhones, which will ‘give users more visibility into the health of their iPhone’s battery, so they can see for themselves if its condition is affecting performance’.
