Its a day of very sad news for Coronation Street viewers, as Peter Armitage, who played Bill Webster on the soap, has sadly passed away.
Peter has been a regular on the cobbles since his first appearance in 1984 – returning again in 1995 to 1997, and most recently between 2006 and 2011.
Announcing the sorry news on Twitter, Charlie Lawson, who plays Jim McDonald, confirmed Peter had passed away aged 78.
Charlie shared: “@itvcorrie@simongregson123 Its with great sadness, that Ive to tell you my great old friend Pete Armitage has died. RIP mate.”
Following the sad revelation, countless co-stars and fans of the ITV soap have shared their own tributes to the beloved actor.
Jane Danson, famed for her role as Leanne Battersby on the cobbles, responded to Charlies message with her own kind words.
“So sorry to hear this, lovely man. Thoughts to family and friends x,” she shared.
Samia Longchambon, who plays Corries Maria Connor, added: “So sorry to hear this Charlie. Pete was such a lovely man… hell be sadly missed.”
Charlie has also been inundated with kind messages from fans of the soap.
“Such a shame, he seemed such a diamond of a bloke. My thoughts are with his family and friends. Xx,” shared one.
Agreeing, another added: “So sad to hear this. My thoughts to his family & to all who knew him.”
The cause of Charlies death has not yet been confirmed.
However, in 2014, Peter had opened up about a private health battle – having revealed his struggles with bowel cancer.
Speaking of the battle, he said: “The only time Ive cried was when they told me the cancer hadnt spread. It was a relief, really, and also the enormity of what Id been through had started to sink in.
“Im in remission and will have check-ups every six months for the next five years.”
Sending our very best to Peters friends and family during this difficult time.
