Singers, poets and tabloid journalists are always banging about blue and pink moons.
But surely everyone knows the moon doesn’t actually change colour, don’t they?
Well, we’re sad to report that some people genuinely do think the moon can take on strange tints – and these credulous folk have just fallen for a huge fib.
It’s been claimed that the moon will turn green in April.
In a post that’s being shared across Twitter and Facebook, one wag claimed: ‘On 20 April 2018, a Green Moon will appear in the sky, a rare event that only occurs every 420 years.’
It goes without saying that the moon won’t actually turn green.
The hoax has appeared at this time for several years and may be linked to 4/20, the date of a day in which weed smokers across the world spark up zoots and call for cannabis to be legalised.
Although some people have fallen for the ‘phoney phenomenon’, it has become something of an in-joke among stoners.
Here’s what the debunking website Snopes said about the green moon rumours: ‘As is often the case with astronomical-themed gags, not all social media users recognised its basis in humour (which in this case was primarily rooted in cannabis culture).’
