Former chancellor Philip Hammond said he is ready for a fight of a lifetime if party officials attempt to prevent him from standing at the next general election.
Dominic Grieve, who served as attorney general under David Cameron, said threats to withdraw the whip demonstrated Mr Johnsons ruthlessness in power.

The former education secretary launched a blistering attack on Mr Johnson, saying her fears that the Conservative Party was morphing into Nigel Farages Brexit Party had come to pass.
