They show 25 boroughs saw confirmed cases tumble by at least 40 per cent in a week, with some of the biggest falls in deprived areas of inner city London.
The seven-day rate in the capital dropped by a startling 42.8 per cent in the week to February 12 to 117.3 new infections per 100,000 Londoners.
The South West is the first region to go below a rate of 100, dropping to 96, after a fall of 27.1 per cent. The smallest decline was in Yorkshire and the Humber of 13.4 per cent to a rate of 156, followed by the North East of 20.4 per cent to 168.9, and the East Midlands by 21.8 per cent to 188.7, the highest rate in the country.
The West Midlands is on a rate of 188.3 after a fall of 27.3, with the North West on 183.2 with a drop of 23.3 per cent.
The figures for London show:
– Confirmed cases halving in nine days to 10,514 in the week to February 12.
– Ten borough areas now have a rate below 100, with Camden the lowest on 66.7, followed by Tower Hamlets on 76.1 and Islington on 77.5. The other seven are Richmond, Lewisham, Southwark, Bromley, Westminster, Hackney and the City of London, and Kensington and Chelsea.
– Thirty-one boroughs saw cases fall by at least a third in the week to February 12, with Barking and Dagenham seeing the slowest decline but even this was down 31.2 per cent to a rate of 168.6, having at one stage having the highest rate in the country, with a second wave peak of 1,719.1.
– All boroughs are now below a rate of 200, with the highest Ealing on 198.7.
– Mayor Sadiq Khan has hailed the “heroic efforts” of Londoners in driving down cases after the city, and other parts of the South East, were first hit with the Kent variant which sent disease levels spiralling at the end of last year.
– Public health chiefs say they would like to see the whole of the city below a rate of 100 before lockdown is eased.
– Health experts say the structure of the capital’s workforce may make it easier for people to work from home which is a factor in reducing Covid levels.
– A further 1,054 confirmed cases were announced for London on Wednesday, far below the five-figure daily totals last month, though the real disease levels are significantly higher, partly given the number of people who have the virus asymptomatically.
– There were 3,500 coronavirus patients in London’s hospitals as of Tuesday, down from a second wave peak of 7,917 on January 18, with 790 so ill that they are on ventilators.
The detailed data show that in Richmond there were 178 cases in the week to February 12, down 215 (54.7%) with a seven-day rate of 89.9, Sutton 248 cases, down 253 (50.5%) rate 120.2, Greenwich 289 cases, down 284 (49.6%) rate 100.4, Lewisham 274 cases, down 253 (48%) rate 89.6, Southwark 265 cases, down 238 (47.3%) rate 83.1, Redbridge 356 cases, down 313 (46.8%) rate 116.6, Croydon 454 cases, down 370 (44.9%) rate 117.4, Tower Hamlets 247 cases, down 198 (44.5%) rate 76.1, Hounslow 505 cases, down 401 (44.3%) rate 186, Brent 527 cases, down 417 (44.2%) rate 159.8,Newham 486 cases, down 380 (43.9%) rate 137.6, Havering 302 cases, down 236 (43.9%) rate 116.4, Barnet 453 cases, down 353 (43.8%) rate 114.4, Hillingdon 524 cases, down 403 (43.5%) rate 170.8, Enfield 350 cases, down 270 (43.5%) rate 104.9, Lambeth 391 cases, down 287 (42.3%) rate 119.9, and Bromley 302 cases, down 218 (41.9%) rate 90.9.
