  1. Despite the fact that kidney dialysis is a complex and lengthy process, it is also one of the most effective ways to improve the quality of life for those with kidney failure. In fact, the treatment can increase a patient’s life expectancy by up to two years.

In a typical dialysis session, the patient is connected to a machine that filters blood. The machine’s filter removes harmful substances from the blood. The clean blood is then sent back into the body.

Dialysis is done either in a dialysis center or at home. It is a procedure that can be completed three to four times a week. The sessions are typically three to four hours long.

After you are diagnosed with kidney failure, you will begin to have blood tests. These tests will confirm your diagnosis. They will also show the progression of your illness. If you have additional diseases, these diseases may affect the treatment of dialysis.

Depending on your needs, you may be referred to a community-based agency to help with the management of your care at home. A social worker may also be involved. You may also meet with a kidney team to discuss your options.

If you are new to hemodialysis, you will need to follow a strict diet. You may also experience some side effects. For example, you may experience lower blood pressure or dizziness. You should report any side effects to the clinic.

You will also need to have your vital signs monitored. Your blood pressure and pulse rate should be checked. If your blood pressure is low, you will need to take medications to improve your blood pressure.
